URTA on the Map- Kent State University

School: Kent State University
Who: Tamara Honesty, Assistant Professor of Scenic Design
Where: Kent, OH

What should a prospective student look for in a training program?

The student should identify why s/he is interested in going to graduate school. Do they want to be an educator, do they need to strengthen their skills, do they want to have a career in NYC or regional theatre (as an assistant designer)? They should not go to graduate school if they are pushing the snooze button on life because they don’t know what else to do.

And what qualities do you think candidates would find in your program that is different from others?

Our program at Kent State University focuses on honing their skills as an educator through taking a course in college teaching, being observed/given feedback by faculty on their teaching, the opportunity to teach in both hands-on lab and lecture environments. We are also a medium-sized program where if they want to stretch their design skills in a different area, we will work to create that opportunity for them.

What is your favorite class you teach and why?

All of my classes are classes I enjoy teaching. It’s like picking a favorite child, they just have different qualities. Design Studio Scenery is one of my favorites in the classroom because it is my design area and there is the opportunity to stretch the boundaries. My ultimate favorite teaching experience is mentoring students through the design process.

What are your favorite things to do off-campus in your free time?

I enjoy taking bootcamp fitness classes.

How do you commute to the university? Do you feel like students need a car or is there sufficient public transportation/is it a walking city?

I commute via car. There is public transportation and many students don’t have cars, but many do. As a graduate student, a valid driver’s license is a must. A car is extremely helpful and nearly required. I guess there is always Uber.
