In a recent ranking of MFA theatre programs by The Hollywood Reporter, 6 URTA Member programs were ranked among the best in the nation, including CalArts, UCLA, University of California-Irvine, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Washington, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The programs were cited for their selectivity, specialization, connections with the industry, and notable alumni including Carrie Coon (Wisconsin), Beth Malone, Teal Wicks (UC Irvine), Joel McHale, Kyle MacLachlan (Washington), and Aleks Pevec (UCLA).
